Pinecrest is one of South Florida's most established corners, and a day here can move at your own pace: botanical gardens in the morning, a splash of water by the afternoon, and a quiet evening close to home. These are the places locals actually go, and all of them sit within minutes of one another.

Pinecrest Gardens, a botanical garden with a past

Pinecrest Gardens sits on the grounds of the original Parrot Jungle and is now a 14-acre village park on Red Road. Families come for the Splash 'N Play water playground, the small petting zoo, the swan lake, and the weekend farmers market. General admission is around five dollars, with free parking.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, right next door

Fairchild covers 83 acres along Old Cutler Road and is known for the Wings of the Tropics butterfly exhibit, a Children's Garden built from natural materials, and seasonal festivals through the year. It sits in Coral Gables on Pinecrest's doorstep, so it belongs on any family list.

Matheson Hammock Park, a tidal atoll pool

Matheson Hammock Park is among Miami-Dade's oldest parks, opened in 1930, with a man-made atoll pool filled and refreshed by the tides of Biscayne Bay. Lifeguards watch the calm, shallow water, and the park also offers kayaking, nature trails, and fishing. Entry runs about five dollars per vehicle on weekdays.

Build the day gently

Start at Pinecrest Gardens before the sun is high, picnic at Matheson Hammock's shaded tables, and end the afternoon at Fairchild if anyone still has energy. For a family that wants green, water, and room to wander, Pinecrest delivers all three in one loop.

Homes near all of it

Buyers drawn to Pinecrest often mention the same thing: the parks become the backyard. Nanci Gilbert, PA can walk you through inventory in Pinecrest and neighboring Palmetto Bay, from updated single-family homes to properties on winding, oak-lined streets.
