Things to Do in and Around the Redland

The Redland is farm country, and its best days are spent outdoors: botanical gardens, a coral landmark, groves, and a wildlife farm. Here is the local list.

The Redland looks different from the rest of the Miami metro on purpose: five-acre lots, groves, lanes lined with old oaks, and farm stands at nearly every second driveway. It is one of the slowest parts of the county and one of its best days out. Here is the local list, from the botanical garden to the roadside stand.

Fruit and Spice Park, the garden you taste

Fruit and Spice Park at 24801 SW 187th Avenue is the centerpiece of the Redland: 37 acres of botanical garden where more than 500 varieties of fruit and spice plants line the paths, mango, avocado, citrus, and more, with the garden's harvest for sale in season. The park runs guided visits and events, and the tasting is best when the trees are full. Bring time and a bag for the fruit stand on the way out.

The groves and the stands by the road

The farm stands are part of the character of the Redland. Names like Robert Is Here and Knaus Berry Farm anchor the road to the groves, and dozens of smaller stands sell mango, avocado, guava, and juice by season: mango through the summer, citrus in the fall, and the tropical fruit that runs most of the year. Stop, ask what is in season, and let the stand decide part of the plan. It is how the countryside feeds the whole weekend.

Coral Castle and the wildlife farms

South toward Homestead, Coral Castle at 28655 S Dixie Hwy is the hand-built limestone landmark famous for its enormous carved structures, a museum and one of the most unusual sights in South Florida. On the wildlife side of the day, Everglades Alligator Farm at 40351 SW 192nd Ave shows Florida's wetlands up close with a walk-through and airboat tours, and Everglades Outpost at 35601 SW 192nd Ave is a rescue and education center along the same road. One stop is the spectacle, the other is the conservation; both are worth the drive.
