In South Florida, summer plans are made in the spring. County parks, the YMCA, and city programs fill quickly, and the best schedules belong to the families who register early. A month-by-month approach turns a potentially stressful scramble into a calm, well-planned season.

January and February: know your calendar

Before researching camps, map the summer weeks you need coverage: the last days of school, the weeks both parents work, and any travel. Count the weeks of full-time care you will need and the weeks you can cover with family, vacation, or a lighter schedule. That single list makes every later decision easier.

March: research the programs

Miami-Dade County Parks opens summer camp registration on April 1 at 9 a.m., with a one-time registration fee and a sibling discount, and runs programs from June into July including the Fit2Play program and specialized camps at Zoo Miami and the Deering Estate. Broward County Parks announces its free Summer Recreation Program for ages 6 to 17 in the spring, with weekday hours and free meals at sites across the county. The YMCA of South Florida runs its own camps with daily swim lessons. Start comparing in March so you are ready when registration opens.

April: register early

Mark the registration dates on your calendar and have a backup program in each slot in case a favorite fills fast. City parks and recreation departments in Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, and Homestead run their own summer offerings in addition to the county programs. Registering in April, not May, is the single most reliable way to get the weeks and locations you want.

May: paperwork and prep

Use May to complete registration forms, confirm emergency contacts and any medication instructions, and refresh swim lessons if your child will be in the water daily. Label water bottles, towels, and backpacks before the first day. A few evenings of prep in May save the chaos of a rushed June morning.

June: enjoy the rhythm

The first week of any camp is an adjustment, for first-timers especially. Pack the same consistent essentials, keep mornings predictable, and talk through the day at pickup. Within a week, most children move from nervous to settled, and the reliable rhythm of summer becomes one of the best parts of the season.
