Story Time and Free Family Programs at South Florida Libraries

Public libraries are South Florida's best free resource for families: story time, reading programs, and air conditioning. These are the branches worth putting on the calendar.

A library card is the lowest-cost membership in Miami-Dade and Broward, and for families with children it is one of the most used. Story time, reading programs, homework support, and crafts happen every week across both county systems, most of it free. Here is where to start.

Miami-Dade Public Library System

MDPLS runs branches across the county with story time for toddlers and preschoolers, kid-friendly programming, and free library cards for residents. In Homestead, the Cybrarium at 80 West Mowry Drive is the city's modern library and maker space, while the Naranja Branch at 14850 SW 280th Street and the Lily Lawrence Bow Library at 212 NW 1st Avenue serve the wider South Dade area.

Broward County Library

Broward's library system is equally generous with children's programming. The Hollywood Branch at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard runs story times and family events through the year, and branches across Miramar and Pembroke Pines keep the same calendar of free programs close to home.

What a typical visit looks like

Most story times run 30 to 45 minutes: songs, a picture book, and a craft, scheduled on a weekly rhythm that gives the family a reason to be out of the house. Both systems also carry strong Spanish-language children's collections, something bilingual families notice and appreciate quickly.

Start with the calendar

Every branch publishes its events online, and both systems make it easy to search by location and age. Pick the branch near your weekday route or your Saturday errands, and the summer reading program alone can carry the whole year of visits.

A free routine that anchors a move

After a move, a weekly story time does more than entertain. It gives children a familiar face, a routine, and new friends, and it gives parents a place to meet neighbors. Nanci often recommends the branch closest to the new address before the boxes are unpacked. It is the cheapest piece of the relocation that pays back fastest.
