The best family outings in South Florida are often the cheapest ones. Between the free museums, the botanical gardens, and the county parks, a weekend of adventure can cost less than a tank of gas. Here is the local list families keep coming back to.

Free museums

The Institute of Contemporary Art in the Miami Design District is free every day, and the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus offers free general admission. HistoryMiami opens free on Family Fun Day, the second Saturday of the month, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami offers free admission on the second Saturday and Sunday. A little planning turns a museum habit into a free one.

Gardens and green spaces

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is free and open several days a week, a compact oasis of tropical planting in the middle of the city. County parks like Amelia Earhart, Tropical, and Greynolds charge parking but little else, and the playgrounds, trails, and picnic tables make them full-day destinations.

Nature centers

Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood, inside West Lake Park, is free on weekdays and a small fee on weekends, with trails, an observation tower, and an aquarium room that kids love. It is one of Broward's best values for a nature morning.

The low-cost classics

Fruit and Spice Park in the Redland charges a modest entry fee for a day wandering one of the most unusual gardens in the country. Miami Children's Museum opens free on the third Friday evening of the month. And the beaches, of course, remain the original free family outing, from Homestead Bayfront to Hollywood's Broadwalk.

Plan the free days

The secret is the calendar. Most of these places publish their free days months ahead, so a family can line up a month of outings for almost nothing. Nanci keeps a running list for her clients, because the families who know their community best are the ones who stay.
