Matheson Hammock Park, at 9610 Old Cutler Road, was Miami-Dade's first county park, and generations of South Florida families have grown up at its atoll pool. Roughly 630 acres on Biscayne Bay, it manages to feel both historic and everyday: coral-rock pavilions, palms, a marina, and water that stays calm enough for young swimmers.

The atoll pool is the centerpiece

The man-made atoll pool is a tidal lagoon flushed by the bay, circled by rock and a small sandy beach. The water is calm and shallow at the edges, which makes it a natural first-swim spot for kids. It is also busy on weekends, so arrive early or plan a weekday visit.

Picnic shelters and grills

Coral-rock pavilions with charcoal grills and picnic tables sit throughout the park, most of them shaded. Families pack a cooler and claim a table for the day. For groups, rentable picnic shelters can be reserved ahead through the county.

Trails, the marina, and a fishing pier

Walking trails wind through the hammock, the marina hosts hundreds of boats in wet slips and dry storage, and a fishing pier reaches into the bay. The historic coral-rock building at the water's edge houses a snack bar and restaurant, and the sunset view from the seawall is one of the best in the county.

Know before you go

The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Parking fees apply per car and are higher on weekends and holidays, so check the current rate before you go. Two things to know: pets are not allowed in the park, and the bay breeze can turn a sunny morning cool, so pack layers along with the sunscreen.

Make it part of a longer day

Matheson sits along Old Cutler Road, a corridor that also holds Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the Deering Estate. Families often pair a morning at the park with a wander or lunch along the way. Whatever the plan, Matheson rewards the simplest version: a blanket, a cooler, and a few unhurried hours by the bay.
