South Florida families do not have to travel far for a day on the water. Minutes from Homestead, Biscayne Bay is lined with county parks built for exactly this: boat ramps, kayak and paddleboard rentals, calm swimming spots, and picnic tables under the palms. Two parks in particular make an easy, unhurried family day.

Black Point Park and Marina

At 24775 SW 87th Avenue, Black Point is a working marina and park where families launch boats, rent kayaks and canoes, and fish from a long jetty that reaches into the bay. Picnic pavilions with grills, a dockside restaurant, and trails along the water round out the day. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, and the marina stays busy around the clock, so the water is rarely empty.

Homestead Bayfront Park

At 9698 SW 328th Street, Homestead Bayfront Park sits next to Biscayne National Park and offers a shallow, man-made atoll pool ideal for young swimmers, a full-service marina with launch ramps and a fishing pier, a playground, and shaded pavilions with grills. La Playa Grill serves food on-site, and water sports equipment is available to rent. A daily entrance fee applies per car.

Pack for the breeze

The bay stays breezy even on sunny days, so bring hats, sunscreen, water, and a layer for the boat ride. Reserve a picnic pavilion ahead on busy weekends, and arrive early to claim a spot near the water. For families with young children, the atoll pool at Bayfront is the gentlest way to start.

Make it a half day or a full one

A morning on the water, a picnic lunch under the pavilion, and an afternoon of paddling or fishing fills the day without a single long drive. For families who want more, Biscayne National Park sits right next door with its own programs, and the drive home is short. The whole loop stays close to home.

A note from Nanci

Nanci points many of her Homestead buyers to these parks before they move, so the first weekend in a new house starts with the water. If a home near the bay is on your list, she can show you the streets that make these launches part of ordinary weekends.
