How do I choose the right real estate agent?

Short Answer

The right agent combines experience in your market, clear communication, and a style that feels comfortable to you. You want someone who listens before they advise, explains things plainly, and has a track record in the neighborhoods you care about. Interview a few, ask direct questions, and choose the person you trust.

Start with your goals

Before you interview agents, be clear about what you need: are you buying, selling, or doing both? Are you moving up, downsizing, relocating, or buying for the first time?

The right agent for you is the one whose experience matches your specific situation.

Look for local market knowledge

Real estate is local, so an agent who knows your neighborhood, its schools, its commutes, and its recent sales is worth more than one who covers everything thinly.

Ask about recent sales in the specific areas you care about, and listen for concrete answers.

Ask about communication

A good agent tells you how they communicate, how often, and through what channels. Buying and selling involve lots of moving parts, so clear communication is essential.

You want an agent who returns calls promptly and keeps you informed without being chased.

Check experience and results

Ask how long they have been in the business and how many transactions they have guided. Experience shows up in how they anticipate problems and handle the unexpected.

It is also fair to ask how they work: how many clients at a time, and whether you will work with them directly or with a team.

Ask direct questions

Do not be shy about the practical questions: how do you set a price, how do you market a home, how do you handle multiple offers, and how do you negotiate for your clients?

The way an agent answers tells you a lot about how they work.

Trust how it feels

Beyond the credentials, pay attention to how the conversation feels. A good agent listens, explains things clearly, and never pressures you.

If a conversation leaves you confused or pushed, that is not the fit. You should feel clear and confident, not rushed.
