The International Aroid Society brings its 49th Tropical Plant Expo to the E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds, 10901 SW 24th Street, on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. The show collects the plants that do not appear in ordinary garden centers: rare aroids, phils, philodendrons, anthuriums and tropical shapes from the warmer parts of the world. It is a flower show, a classroom and a market in equal parts.

A plan for every level of gardener

Saturday runs from 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon and Sunday from 9 to 4. General admission for one day is about 20 dollars and two days about 30, with a discount for members and a lower price for children. Vendors from more than 80 growers bring plants to sell, speakers run short sessions for beginners and collectors, and the Saturday evening dinner and auction closes the weekend for the growers' crowd.

The patient way to build a garden

South Florida yards reward the slow approach: a shade garden, a corner for fruit, one striking plant that anchors the whole patio. The expo is the place to meet the plant before committing it to the soil, at a pace that suits anyone building a garden one pot at a time. Bring the photos of your yard, ask concrete questions, and leave with a plan instead of a gamble.
