Volunteering With Kids in Miami-Dade and Broward: Where Families Serve Together

Serving together teaches children more than any lecture about community. Here are real volunteer opportunities across South Florida that welcome families.

A move to a new community is the right moment to become part of it, and volunteering is the fastest way. South Florida has real, family-friendly opportunities where children as young as five or six can serve alongside their parents, sorting food, reading to shelter animals, or cleaning up a park.

Sort food at Feeding South Florida

Feeding South Florida is the region's largest food bank, serving Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties. Its volunteer shifts welcome children, with age rules that vary by task, and every box you pack goes directly to a family in need. Registration is online in advance, and shifts fill fast, so plan ahead.

Read to shelter animals

At the Humane Society of Greater Miami, children ages five to twelve can join Kitty Tales and read aloud to shelter cats with a parent alongside. It is a gentle introduction to both literacy and animal care, and it calms the very animals it is meant to comfort.

Join a park cleanup

Miami-Dade's Volunteers in Parks program runs Park Service Days and coastal cleanups that welcome families, students, and community groups across the county. Gloves and bags are provided, the work is outdoors, and children see the results of their effort the same afternoon.

Broward's family crews

HandsOn South Florida runs the Kindness Crew, a monthly service program designed for children ages five to twelve with their families, alongside a Teen Service Squad for ages thirteen and up. Broward County Animal Care also welcomes younger helpers through donation drives, even though hands-on shelter work is limited to sixteen and older.

Start with one Saturday

Volunteering does not need to be a weekly commitment to matter. One Saturday a month, one food box, one hour reading to a cat, teaches a child that community is something you build. Nanci lives this value too. She has watched families bond more over a park cleanup than a season of organized activities.
