The South Dade YMCA hosts its Spook and Slam Fall Festival on Friday, October 23, from 5 to 8 in the evening at its family center, 9355 Southwest 134 Street in Miami. The community night brings trunk-or-treating, a haunted house, a costume contest, a best-decorated-trunk contest and family activities together in one parking-lot festival, with food vendors on hand and a three-on-three basketball tournament tipping off at 6 in the evening.

Two traditions in one evening

The name says it all. Spook is the Halloween half: decorated car trunks, costumes and a haunted house for the brave. Slam is the sports half: a three-on-three basketball tournament that gives older kids and parents something to compete for while the little ones trick-or-treat. Between the two, the event keeps every age busy.

An easy stop for south Miami-Dade families

The Y sits at 134 Street near the Palmetto Expressway, minutes from Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay. For families balancing school nights, a Friday-evening festival is a contained way to start the Halloween weekend. Costumes, water and comfortable shoes are all a family needs; the trunk-or-treating, games and tournament are the rest.
