Preparing Your South Florida Home for a Cold Front

Cold fronts come quickly and leave fast, but a few hours of frost can stress plants, pipes, and pools. A short checklist keeps the home comfortable through the dip.

Cold fronts arrive in South Florida several times between November and March. The temperature drops fast, usually for a night or two, and then the sun returns. The homes that ride through them smoothly are the ones prepared before the front, not during it.

Protect the plants

Tropical landscaping is the first casualty of a freeze. Cover frost-sensitive plants with sheets or frost cloth before sunset, and bring potted palms and container gardens under a porch or into the garage. Water the soil before a cold night; moist ground holds heat better than dry ground.

Keep the pipes moving

In a hard freeze, run a slow drip from faucets on exterior walls and open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air reaches the plumbing. Know where the main shutoff valve is before you need it. South Florida pipes rarely freeze, but on the one night they do, a slow drip is the cheapest insurance.

Give the pool a small gift

Run the pool pump through the coldest nights so the water keeps moving. Skim the leaves before the front arrives so the filter is not fighting debris at the same time the air drops. A moving pool stays warmer than a still one, and it is far easier on the equipment.

Bring the animals in

Pets and livestock feel the cold first. Move dogs and cats inside or to a protected space, and make sure outdoor animals have dry shelter and unfrozen water. A cold front in the Redland is a reminder that a farm home's winter list is longer than a suburban one's.

A brief season

The morning after is the payoff: crisp air, clear skies, and some of the best weather of the year. Nanci has watched South Florida homes and their families through two decades of cold fronts, and the pattern is always the same: a little preparation, a warm house, and a beautiful afternoon.
