The day after the holidays feels different in a South Florida home: the tree still stands, the lights still glow, and the kitchen still carries the week of cooking. Taking the season down in the right order protects your home and makes the reset feel calm rather than overwhelming. A little planning turns the chore into a fresh start.

Take down the lights early in the day

In South Florida, late December is mild, but January heat can arrive quickly. Work through outdoor lights in the morning, before the sun makes the roof and gutters uncomfortable. Pack strands loosely after checking for burnt bulbs, and label the box so next winter starts organized.

Pack fragile decorations with care

Ornaments, glassware, and candles deserve slow handling. Wrap breakables in tissue or soft cloth, cushion them in sturdy bins, and keep heavy items at the bottom. A few minutes of careful packing now saves both the decorations and the frustration next year.

Give the kitchen a full reset

After a week of gatherings, the kitchen does the most work. Oven interiors, stovetop grates, counters, and the sink benefit from a thorough once-over. Run the dishwasher empty on a cleaning cycle if it has one, and wipe down the pantry shelves before returning everyday items. A clean kitchen resets the whole house.

Declutter while you take down

The holidays bring gifts in and decorations out, which makes January the natural moment to sort. Donate what the family no longer uses and find a place for what stays. When you list a home later, that same habit makes preparing for showings far easier.

Transition into the dry season

Once the decorations are down, switch your attention to the dry-season routine: check the air conditioning filter, review the irrigation schedule, and confirm screens and seals are sound. Small checks now keep the house running smoothly through the cooler months.
