How School Choice Works in Miami-Dade and Broward for Moving Families

Your address assigns a zoned school, but it is not the only option. Miami-Dade and Broward both layer magnet programs and choice applications on top of the neighborhood school.

For families moving to South Florida with school-age children, the first question is almost never about the house. It is about the school your address will assign. In both Miami-Dade and Broward, every home maps to a zoned school by address, and on top of that map both districts offer school choice: magnet programs, choice programs, transfer applications, and charters. Understanding the layers, and the calendar, makes the whole move calmer.

Start with the zoned school

The zoning map is your baseline. Miami-Dade's locator and Broward's Find My School tool both show the assigned school for any address, so enter the prospective address before you fall in love with the house. The zoned school may already be a great fit, and many families never need anything else. Knowing the assignment early also tells you whether a choice application is even necessary.

The magnet layer

Miami-Dade runs one of the country's largest magnet systems, with more than 370 magnet programs countywide across themes like STEM, arts, languages, and international studies. Families apply online through the district's choice portal, usually in a fall window with a January deadline for the following school year, and most placements are by random selection. Broward runs its own magnet programs through its school choice application, with a window that typically opens each November and closes in late January.

Charters and transfers

Charter schools are public and tuition-free, but they are separate from the district choice application: each charter runs its own admission process, so you apply directly to the school. Transfers, by contrast, are district applications to attend a different zoned school when space allows, and they generally do not include bus transportation. Transportation policies matter more than they sound: magnet bus service differs by district, and choice programs in Miami-Dade rarely provide it.

A calmer way to choose

Families who plan the school piece before the home search treat the address as a decision, not a surprise. Tour the zoned school, note the choice calendar for the fall, and ask each school you visit about its application process and its bus service. Bring those answers to the home search, and the house and the school can fit the same family.

One person to walk you through it

School data changes, boundaries shift, and application windows close fast. Nanci works across Miami-Dade and Broward and guides families through the school-and-house question together, so the move decision covers both. Her job is to make sure the address you choose supports the school plan you want.
