Miramar Pineland Park, 3600 South University Drive, hosts a Halloween Night Hike on Saturday, October 31, led by the Sierra Club Florida chapter and starting at 6:30 in the evening. Hikers walk the park's boardwalk through preserved pine flatwoods as dusk settles, with flashlights and headlamps recommended for the way back. The hike costs five dollars for non-members and three for Sierra Club members.

A quieter kind of Halloween

Not every family wants the noise of a festival, and the night hike is built for the ones who prefer the outdoors: a short, level boardwalk route through one of the region's surviving pine rockland habitats, with the moonlight doing most of the decorating. The park is known for its boardwalk and overlook, and hikers often spot gopher tortoises and native birdlife even at dusk. It is Halloween for the family that would rather hear crickets than car horns.

What to bring

Bring a flashlight or headlamp, closed shoes, and a water bottle, and arrive a few minutes early so the group can start at twilight. The trail is easy and works well for older children, but it is an outdoor walk, so dress for the evening air. For families weighing a move near western Broward's preserves, the hike is a small preview of the green space that comes with the address.
