Fishing With Kids in Miami-Dade and Broward

Good family fishing is about the right spot, not the right catch: a jetty where the fish come to you, a beach with calm water, and a pier that rents rods.

Fishing is one of the easiest family outings in South Florida when you pick the spot for the children, not for the trophy: a jetty where the fish come to you, a beach with calm water, and a pier that rents the gear. Five real places across Miami-Dade and Broward cover the range.

Black Point Park and Marina

Black Point, at 24775 Southwest 87th Avenue in the Cutler Bay area, gives families the easiest start in South Dade: a long jetty where fish cruise past the rocks, a bait and tackle shop on site, and picnic pavilions for the half-day version of the trip. Arrive early on weekends, because this is the spot everyone knows.

Homestead Bayfront Park

Homestead Bayfront, at 9698 Southwest 328th Street, pairs a sandy beach and a shallow atoll pool with shore fishing along the bay, and the full-service marina on site sells bait and tackle. It is the rare spot where the swimmers and the anglers in one family both get their morning.

Dania Beach Pier

In Broward, the Dania Beach Pier at 100 North Beach Road is one of only three fishing piers in the county: a roughly 900-foot walk over the Atlantic with rod rentals and bait sold on site. A modest daily fee covers the walk; head out early and the parking is easy. Check the pier page before you go, because hours change with the season.

Hollywood North Beach Park

At the quiet end of Hollywood, the fishing piers at Hollywood North Beach Park sit over the Intracoastal, where the water stays calm even when the ocean is rough. It is the patient choice for beginners: short casts, plenty of shade, and a picnic table right behind the rail.

C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines

For freshwater beginners, C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines fishes its 80-acre lake for bass, bream, and catfish from the shoreline or small boats, with the water park and playgrounds nearby for the non-anglers in the group. It is the most forgiving first outing this side of the county line.

A note from Nanci

Florida requires a saltwater or freshwater fishing license for anyone 16 and older; children under 16 fish without one. Carry the license on your phone, bring sun protection and water, and check park fees and hours before you go. Nanci can point you to the right spot for your family's level, and to homes that put the water within a short walk.
