The cooler months are South Florida's outdoor season, and the trails fill with families who waited all summer for this. From hardwood hammocks to pine rocklands, the region holds real hikes, not just strolls. Here are six parks where the walking is easy enough for kids and interesting enough for everyone.

Oleta River State Park, North Miami Beach

Florida's largest urban park sits on Biscayne Bay with more than ten miles of multiuse trails. The paved and natural loops wind through mangroves and oak hammocks, and the kayak launch makes it easy to turn a hike into a half-day outing. Entry is per vehicle, and the trails are well marked.

Greynolds Park, North Miami Beach

A shaded mile loop under old oaks and strangler figs follows the Oleta River. The old quarry walls and the observation mound give kids something to climb and look for, and the park stays cooler than the open fields nearby. It is the kind of walk that works on a warm afternoon.

Castellow Hammock, Homestead

In the Redland, this preserve protects one of the last tropical hardwood hammocks in the county. Short, shaded trails pass beneath rare trees and old-growth canopy, and the nature center explains what you are seeing. For families exploring Redland acreage and farm country, it is a perfect stop.

Long Key Natural Area, Davie

One of Broward's largest conserved natural areas, Long Key offers an easy oak hammock trail, a boardwalk, and a nature center. The trail is flat and shaded, which makes it a favorite for strollers and young walkers, and the wildlife sightings are reliable.

Tree Tops Park, Davie

A canopy loop through cypress and oak, a long boardwalk over restored marsh, and miles of equestrian trails give Tree Tops a country feel minutes from the suburbs. The observation areas are good for birdwatching, and the picnic grounds make it easy to turn the hike into the whole morning.

Markham Park, Sunrise

On the western edge of Broward, Markham Park's levee trail looks out over the Everglades, and its nature trails wind through nearly seven hundred acres of woods and open space. The mountain bike trails keep older kids busy, and the flat walking paths suit everyone else. It is the closest many families will get to the wild edge of the county.
